Deirdre Mitchell

Deirdre grew exploring the mountains of her home country of Scotland and immersing herself in its history and culture. This love of the past led her to study for an MA in Scottish History at the University of St Andrews where she studied everything from the medieval history of Scotland to the art history of Europe! She then went on to gain an MLitt in Museum and Gallery Studies before spending a year as a Trainee Curator at the Museum of the University of St. Andrews. 

Having completed her studies and training, Deirdre decided it was time for an adventure. She applied for the position of Curator at the South Georgia Museum and from October 2014 to April 2015 she lived and worked in the abandoned whaling station at Grytviken, surrounded by penguins and fur seals. As well as the normal museum tasks of creating new exhibitions and leading tours of the whaling station, Deirdre also threw herself into the more unusual elements of living on South Georgia. On her days off she might be found helping British Antarctic Survey scientists with Fur Seal and Gentoo weighing, going for a spin on the jet boats or scrambling up the nearest scree-covered mountain! Having fallen in love with wild and remote places, Deirdre now divides her time between the Scottish Highlands, where she works for the National Trust for Scotland, and exploring the British Isles and Antarctica with Lindblad-National Geographic.
