Reflections of a dark orange sun are shown on the clouds as we awaken at Bartolome Island. At first glance we seem to be surrounded by desolate arid islands. However, upon closer inspection we find an interesting mix of vibrant life.
Our early hike finds us climbing hundreds of steps to the summit of this small island. Insignificant plants cover some of the compacted ash and lava flows, insignificant in size but not in importance as these pioneer plants break down this substrate to allow soil to be created for the future arrival of vegetation. At the summit we encounter a spectacular view with many islands visible in the distance.
After a hearty breakfast and obtaining snorkeling equipment we return to Bartolome and the fine sand beach found there. A couple of Galapagos penguins examine us as we enter the water and snorkel around the iconic pinnacle rock found here. Diamond sting rays, white-tipped reef sharks, parrot fish, Galapagos grunts, and razor surgeon fish accept us as part of this three dimensional world. Navigation continues as we head to Rabida Island with our Chef Franklin giving us an incredible traditional Ecuadorian lunch. Ecuadorian culture is explained in its cuisine and all are ready for a traditional Ecuadorian siesta.
Rabida Island stands out as we anchor close to a dark red beach. Kayakers and snorkelers head to the lee of the island where they encounter very calm water and a bright sun overhead. Sea lions swim among some kayakers with occasional Pacific green sea turtles lifting their heads above the surface for a breath of air. Large Opuntia prickly pear trees line the coast with tall white Palo Santo incense trees showing the first leaves of the season. Snorkelers are surprised as they find penguins flitting by them and realize that they are swimming in 80 F. degree water. Sea turtles feed on algae in the shallows and white-tipped reef sharks appear to have a distinct direction as they casually pass the snorkelers. Landing on the “oxidized” beach in the late afternoon we have a chance to walk among the sea lions, some with pups nursing. An American oyster catcher picks in the sand searching for crustaceans as the sun dips in the distance. At last a cool breeze starts to blow as we return to our floating home and content smiles are received as calmness falls upon the ocean.
