A pair of kayakers glides past the snout of the intriguingly named Comfortless Glacier, on the western side of the island of Spitsbergen. The glacier, which to be fairdoesn't look any less comfortable than any other river of ice around here, is 2 miles wide and drains into English Bay. This glacier takes its name from the bay, which was formerly known as Cove Comfortless. Although the exact reasons for the name are not recorded, one only needs to show up here in winter or with the wrong wind blowing to know that it must have been apt. However, it didn't describe the conditions this morning, when we turned loose most of our 24 kayaks for some private journeys around this scenic fjord. The inflatable kayaks are extremely stable and were even enjoyed by those guests, of all ages, with no prior experience.
