Late last night/early this morning, we arrived in the most southern "city" in the world - Ushuaia, Argentina. This pretty little town is home to over 40,000 people. It is the original site for the British South American Missionary Society, which established its first permanent presence on Tierra del Fuego in 1870. Some time later an Argentine penal colony was established here, and over the years it has housed some of this country's most notorious criminals. There are no more native peoples in Tierra del Fuego. Today the town thrives on fisheries, electronic assembly, and tourism. Ushuaia is a major jumping off point for Antarctica and the Chilean Fjords. Until 2003 Ushuaia also benefits from tax-free status, which has fueled its rapid growth.
