A variety of fishermen were packed into the port of Mar del Plata when we visited this afternoon. In the foreground are the originals, South American sea lions, which have taken over one section of the protected harbor and spend many of their daytime hours basking here before going to sea each evening to hunt for fish and squid. This particular colony is a bachelor haul-out and not a breeding ground. In the background, behind these furry fishers, are the main consumers in these waters - the Mar del Plata fishing fleet. The colorful boats come and go daily and while the fisherman generally do not like the sea lions, the two groups coexist peacefully in the harbor or this seaside resort.
