During breakfast the Caledonian Star docked at the small port of San Sebastian on Isla La Gomera in the Canary Islands. Our tour of the island took us up and up along very nice curving roads. The scenery was quite spectacular and many people were surprised at what this Canary Island actually looked like.

On the side of the island where we docked the environment was arid, although they had rain recently so some of the plants were quite green. We learned a great deal about the island from our local guides. On the southern side of the island many rock terraces lie abandoned from earlier centuries of farming. Today much of the agriculture occurs on the northern side of the island and still on percipitous terraces clinging to the steep slopes. Much of the middle and higher parts of thge island are included in a large national park called Garajonay. We had a chance to walk a short trail in some of the native laurel/heath forest and then had a wonderful picnic lunch. On our return to the port we stopped at a small handicraft shop in the very picturesque small community of Hermigua.
