At Sea

Early risers were rewarded with a magnificent sunrise. Another relaxing sunny day at sea was in store for us. By now an on-board routine was developed. The fitness buffs joined Suzana for our daily exercise sessions on deck while others caught up with their reading or joined the staff on the Bridge for some birdwatching. On deck it was a “booby day”! Throughout the day masked boobies accompanied us, performing all sorts of incredible maneuvers while diving to catch the flying fish we scared with the ship.

Michael Layland gave a very interesting slide illustrated talk this morning on cannibalistic illustrations on old maps, showing the European obsession with cannibalism in Brazil. They often included lurid scenes of sacrifices, cooking pots and severed legs among the forest trees.

In the afternoon at Jim Kelley’s presentation we learned about the effects of El Nino and La Nina on world weather. After dinner the special crew we have on board delighted us with a fun and creative show. During the performance, there was singing and some very funny skits and we retired to our cabins with smiles and joy.
