Floreana Island
It was only 6:30 in the morning, and we were already making our way to the famous Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. I always feel very inspired when I get to a place with so much history, especially when I know that pirates, whalers, fur seal hunters and buccaneers stood in the very same place where I was standing this morning. Even the very first human being ever attempting to settle in the archipelago landed in this very spot; what a privilege! It was also here where by the late seventeen hundreds, an ancient wooden wine barrel was placed, and since then it has been a very important location in the South Pacific for sailors and general visitors. Not everybody visiting the Galápagos gets to know how fascinating human history can be.
After taking a look at the barrel and checking its contents, we headed for a very beautiful and relaxing Zodiac ride around a rockery called “la loberia,” also known as the sea lion rock. This is a magical setting of isolated rockeries filled with mangroves. These trees are the perfect place for pelicans and great blue herons to sit and nest, so this visit was not only highlighted by sea lions, but for many marine birds, as well. Once we were done with our first outing of the day, we went back to our good ship Islander for a well deserved breakfast. Meanwhile, our Captain relocated the ship for our next adventure, snorkeling! Champion Island was our destination, and we took off as soon as we could for some snorkeling and Zodiac rides. The visibility of the water was great, therefore the amount of marine wildlife was abundant. This included the presence of baby sea lions, which were extremely playful and invited us all to join in an unforgettable display of underwater ballet! Nobody wanted to leave the water, and that is a good sign that every one was having fun!
Our afternoon was equally full of activities, including more snorkeling over an area called devil’s crown, kayaking near by la loberia and of course a hike, the last one leading us to an area full of flamingoes. After all this we decided to call it a day, and went back to our ship wearing big, big smiles!
