Southern Isabela Island

It’s amazing to see how Mother Nature designs each environment of our islands. Today we had a very foggy morning as we were heading to the summit of Sierra Negra Volcano. We felt a gentle mist on our faces as we were walking, giving us even more energy to continue towards the rim of the crater. Our desire to see the volcano was stronger than the few drops of water dripping down our chins, and at the end of the hike, there it was, Sierra Negra. Even when we did not see the full magnificence of the caldera, a glimpse of it was enough to appreciate such a beautiful gift from nature, and this was enough evidence that it’s always something special in the Galápagos for every one of us. We started to go down with our shoes and feet covered with mud, though we were happy that we had such an energizing experience.

This was not all for the day, because the afternoon had reserved special experiences, as well. While we were visiting the Land Tortoises Breeding Centre of Isabela Island, there were a couple of tortoises mating right in front of us. This was a lot more information than some of our guests wanted or needed to know, but you can’t control nature and its calls, so we took it as another unforgettable experience that we were able to see while in the Galápagos. Not too far away from the “show,” the incubators and the post-born tortoises enclosures where located. It was nice to appreciate the efforts made by the Charles Darwin Research Station and the National Park Service to restore damaged populations back to the islands. The whole Galápagos experience is giving us hope, and certainly today we were filled with a little extra portion of it. We are in the right track, at least here at this little peace of land in the Pacific called Galápagos.
