Bartolome and Santiago Islands
We had an early morning for our first hike and full day in the “Enchanted Islands”; we climbed up a wooden stairway to the summit of Bartolome. Three hundred and seventy two steps were constructed for us to reach the summit on a “foot step free path,” and enjoy the most spectacular view of the archipelago, the world famous pinnacle rock.
Soon after our walk we geared up for water activities. Bartolome Island is also known for its golden beach and its occasional special visitor, the Galápagos penguin. This snorkeling site is rich in bio-diversity and our guests were very much exited to experience it.
After the Islander relocated to our next site, we launched for our afternoon snorkel and walk. Puerto Egas has a wonderful coastline that when in low-tide, reveals hidden ecosystems within itself for our enjoyment: crabs, marine iguanas grazing on the alga, just to mention a few. But one particular touching event was to see a pregnant female sea-lion. Her belly was having muscle contractions as the pup inside was almost ready to come out. We sat, waited and hoped to see such a gift from nature, while we observed the warm equatorial sunset. In the end it did not happen, the baby wasn’t ready, but we were happy to know that the miracle of birth will be happening very soon.
After this beautiful and very active day, we planned ahead for tomorrow. This is just the beginning of the week and our expedition has just started, so we can’t wait for what's coming next.
