Floreana Island

It is seven in the morning and we are already in our way to visit one of the most remarkable areas in Floreana, the Post Office Barrel. This traditional site was created long ago under a very altruistic premise: to link the sailors and their families! At least that was the original intentions of the barrel, nowadays, it works slightly different. More than ninety percent of the visitors from all over the world that comes to the Galápagos, goes by the island of Floreana, becoming one of the “most to do things” while you are here.

Our visit to the barrel ended successfully, since lots of our guests found post cards to deliver (the traditions stipulates, no stamps and only hand delivering!)

The rest of our morning was dedicated to the marine environment of the Galápagos. The snorkeling was perhaps, the best of the week; listening at the guests’ comments about it was so entertaining. Everyone experienced what was like to encounter a sea lion under water and almost everyone saw sharks, rays and turtles!

Galápagos is one of those places where the unimaginable could happen any time, and so this morning, right after our snorkeling, Orca whales showed up just as we were returning to the ship. It was a lot of fun to follow them for a while, as more than ten of them were traveling in a fairly good speed, but showed its majestic bodies to us once in a while.

Our afternoon was equally fun, as we encountered flamingoes, ducks and lots of shore birds at a near by lagoon located at Punta Cormorant (named after a shipwreck, we never saw a cormorant here before!)

By the end of the day everyone was quite content, and we couldn’t help but to make a toast to a glorious sunset that gave closure to a wonderful day of activities.
