Isabela & Fernandina Islands
Can you imagine how exciting it is to spend Christmas day on one of the most pristine and fabulous natural destinations in the whole world? We started this special day with a golden beginning, a spectacular sighting of a large pod of sperm whales; around twenty-five individuals was spotted from the bridge. A general announcement was made to be sure that most of us onboard had the chance to observe this thrilling event. With amazement and admiration we were able to watch at a close range how gracefully these huge cetaceans were cruising in front of our eyes. Crossing the equatorial line was very special today as well. King Neptune commissioned Mr. Leatherback and some pirates to come onboard on his behalf. We had a blast of a time! Mr. Leatherback has been all over the world spreading the word of conservation in order to save the sea turtles on our planet. The Galápagos Islands are no exception; we were privileged to have him onboard this week. Later in the morning we practiced snorkelling around Punta Vicente Roca, this outing was highly successful. We had the delight to swim with the unfortunately endangered sea turtles that Mr. Leatherback is trying to help as a remarkable initiative of Conservation International.
The afternoon found us anchored at Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island. This remote location is as close to a dream as you can imagine. The intrinsic beauty of this place is the exquisite product of a magical mix, isolation and abundance of exotic wildlife. Large marine iguana groups, cheerful sea lions and flightless cormorants were all together with the wild beauty of the volcanic surroundings, creating an unforgettable image in our hearts and minds. Merry Christmas to all of you who have been with us in previous expeditions, and for those of you who are planning to visit us in the future!
