Genovesa Island

And so begins our first day of this new month. Got out early to wander the coraline beach of Darwin Bay. Frigate chicks eyeballed us from out of their scrawny necks and downy ruffs. Swallow-tailed gulls preening and preening – both themselves and their mates – then rolling eggs and exchanging duties. The gulls abruptly turn from foot-watching into toe-cleaning.

Some decide to take it easy on the beach this morning and lie contented on the sand. One has his head propped and binoculars out, the other snoozes. The sea lion had his choice of locations on a very empty beach, yet chose company rather than an isolated corner. Our guest was there first, the sea lion joined him later. We are both social creatures, and it was wonderful to see a sea lion choose a human as a companion (there were other sea lions near by). I can’t think of too many places on earth where we can be invited by the non-human residents to join them in a brief siesta.
