Bartolome Island

How much closer can one get to nature? How much closer could a bird of prey want to get to people? A young hawk did not know about boundaries, and it might be because there are no actually boundaries for animals on these islands, Galapagos belongs to them.

There are many individuals and organizations that are willing to keep this wonderful archipelago as special as it is now. The Galapagos National Park Service does a great job for the conservation of the Encantadas. They also get support from many other institutions. Lindblad Expeditions has been a great sponsor of dozens of Galapagos projects, and National Audubon Society has supported the islands as well.

Ricardo Stanoss, the Audubon representative on board the Polaris this week, talked to us about Audubon’s activities in Latin America and the Caribbean. This organization supports local environmental leaders in the task of creating a culture of conservation through grass roots activities. Teachers apply a hands-on learning methodology that promotes critical and independent thinking. The Schoolyard Ecology method allows children to fall in love with nature before we expect them to protect it.

We can trust that visitors and inhabitants of the Galapagos will always be able to get close to nature, because there are many people working to preserve it.
