Santa Cruz Island

Today we visited an area called Los Gemelos in the highlands of Santa Cruz. We were in awe when we saw the remains of what was once a huge crater. The garua fog, carried by very cold air, was heavy enough to sink into the sunken crater as it blew across.

Today was also a tortoise day. We met these creatures for the first time at the Charles Darwin Research Station where we learned about the captive breeding program. It was amazing to see them waiting for food, and having their symbolic fighting, by raising heads against each other. The winner is… the highest head, while the other turns around and leaves for somewhere else.

Our afternoon was full of tortoises as we walked through a highland farm belonging to Steve Divine. Here, hundreds of tortoises gather every year with the purpose of foraging and preparing for the difficult January migration to the lowlands where they nest.
