Isabela & Fernandina Islands
Early in the morning we started out with a circumnavigation around Roca Redonda, the home for thousands of sea birds that swarmed around it. We were rewarded with a sight of common dolphins, which were fishing around this rock full of nutrients. We continued on to our next sight and passed the equator line from the northern to the southern hemisphere and our king Neptune together with his wife Nereida and several pirates took over our ship to demand respect for crossing the equator without his permission; so sacrifice was offered, but at the end, we baptized our pollywogs and today they are very proud holders of their first equator crossing on board the Polaris in the enchanted islands.
Soon after we reached our next visitor site, Punta Vicente Roca, we deployed our Zodiacs for an expedition along the coast in search of flightless cormorants and penguins, just to mention a few. Geology and marine life was also impressive, like the ocean sunfish, also known as Mola mola. After we finished, we came back on board to start our snorkel in nutrient rich waters that sustain a large amount of life, but one of the most impressive today was the green pacific sea turtle, which were all around us and we all had the opportunity to enjoy them.
Back on board for our lunch, we repositioned our ship to our next site, Punta Espinoza on Fernandina, our only visitor site on this island. Fernandina is a brand new volcanic island and still has its lava flows frozen in time for us: a perfect scenario for colonizing wildlife like lava cactus, mangroves, iguanas, crabs, cormorants in their nesting sites and, of course, our faithful companions, the Galápagos sea lions!
As we navigate to our next adventure, we share our pictures and experiences of such a wonderful day, wondering what Nature will bring for us in the days to come as we continue on our expedition in the Galápagos Islands.
