Española Island

We disembarked this morning on the most dramatic island of the archipelago, which the waved albatross call home. However it is home as well for the Española marine iguana, mocking birds and lava lizards, just to name a few. At the disembarkation area we were greeted by a colony of sea lions, females, pups and males all around us; colorful sally light foot crabs stand out from the black lava rock and this is just the beginning.

Española Island is not only impressive for its biology but also for its geology. Boulders, cliffs and of course our world famous “blow hole” awaited us, ejecting a thundering white foamy veil of ocean water over the black eroded lava rocks.

Soon after the loop we came back on board surrounded by a whispering tropical ocean breeze, to share our individual experiences.

As the ship repositioned, we were greeted by a delicious, typical Ecuadorian lunch. Our next destination was Gardner Bay. Here is where we started off with our water activities, like the glass bottom boat, kayaks, snorkelling and the most anticipated event of the afternoon, turquoise waters and a long white sandy beach filled with playful sea-lions. Some of us did it all, while a few preferred to lay on a beach towel and enjoy the tranquility.

As the sun set, we came back on board and later during “recap”, shared yet again experiences. It is wonderful to see our younger guests absorbing it all, and to see the islands through their eyes, and wonder of how this can be topped in the coming days.

Our expeditions have just started, so stay with us dear reader; more adventures are yet to come.
