Santa Cruz Island

The Polaris had a very easy and calm navigation from Isabela Island towards Santa Cruz. We had breakfast at 7am, and left shortly after at 8 in the morning only to come back on board at 6 in the late afternoon. We were out all day long and spent the whole day around the town of Puerto Ayora and the highlands of Santa Cruz.

Our first expedition took place in the Galápagos Giant Land Tortoise Rearing Center. We learned how the tortoise dynasty is recovering thanks to the great job of the Galápagos National Park Service’s wardens who, together with scientists have achieved important milestones in recuperating several populations of the Giant Land Tortoises in the wild.

After the visit to this rearing center, we helped the local economy by buying several colorful souvenirs, then we took buses at noon to a beautiful farm situated in the greenery of the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. There, we all had great fun as a lighthearted volleyball match was celebrated with our naturalists playing together with kids and adults. After the game we all enjoyed a well deserved lunch.

On our way back down to the town of Puerto Ayora, we took our buses and chose different activities, bird watching, tortoise watching, and finally some more shopping. After all this fun, we enjoyed our dinner and for dessert we were offered a beautiful artistic show with local musicians with their dancers. They interpreted creations from Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands.

We all went to bed early to put our strength together and get ready for another great day in paradise.
