Floreana Island
We had an amazing day, with all kinds of sightings, from flamingos to penguins, from giant cactus to deciduous trees. We started learning a little about the human history of the Galápagos Islands. Early in the morning we visited a barrel that has been at Post Office Bay for several decades. It was used first by whalers, and today it is used by visitors to the Galápagos who want to keep up with the old tradition of hand delivering mail.
The snorkeling was fabulous. Everyone came back with a big smile, happy for the playful sea lions they had encountered in Champion Islet. Our mockingbird tour was pretty successful as well. We spotted several of the rare Floreana mockingbirds, extinct from the big island, but still found on satellite rocks around it.
In the afternoon some went to Devil’s Crown, a place known for its very strong currents. Today it was mild though, and some people found a penguin chasing salemas, along with sharks, turtles and colorful fish. The walk took us very close to flamingos. We spotted a nest and four chicks in the brackish lagoon of Punta Cormorant. It was an amazing day!
