Isabela and Fernandina Islands
The morning was amazingly beautiful, with clear sky and the view of four of Isabela volcanoes to the south and Roca Redonda pretty close to the ship on our starboard side.
There was a strong current but nevertheless we got to this isolated rock, the only remnant of a much bigger volcano built up on the Galápagos sea floor.
After crossing the equator and getting our certificates as shellbacks signed up by King Neptune himself, we lowered the Zodiacs for a spectacular ride that took us close to Mola molas and green sea turtles. The best part was snorkelling among them, and also penguins and rays joined in. Visibility was extremely good and the sightings couldn’t be better.
In the afternoon we visited Fernandina, the youngest in this archipelago. We saw cormorants nesting and the largest iguanas of the Galápagos. There was a hawk perching on a mangrove tree and even a Galápagos snake showed up in between the fissures. Now we are sailing towards Puerto Ayora, and the experiences of today, so fresh in our minds, make us smile.
