Bartholomew & Santiago Islands
Our morning started with a pre-breakfast hike to the top of Bartolomew Island. We looked carefully around us and found a Galápagos snake still resting underneath one of the steps. We enjoyed magnificent landscapes and views of the geological formations and also of the pinnacle rock from the top, which is perhaps the most famous scene in the entire archipelago. The view known as the “moon landscape” and the multiple parasitic cones enclosed by bright red lava flows was gorgeous.
After a well deserved breakfast we took the Zodiacs and disembarked on to a dazzling golden colored beach. We walked up a dune to the south beach were several sea turtle nests were observed
One of the nicest surprises was to find some brown pelicans nesting on top of some red and white mangroves, while some white tipped reef sharks were swimming along the coast.
We left the southern beach and went back to its northern realm where we snorkeled from the shore and around the pinnacle rock, we swam with lots of fish, found sharks resting and also some had a brief encounter with Galápagos penguins.
During the afternoon we wandered around Puerto Egas on Santiago Island were Galápagos sea lions approached to us and showed curiosity and little concern about us making us feel like we were part of their same kind. We ended our week’s exploration of the Galápagos with a great sunset and great memories.
