Today passengers aboard the Sea Bird took advantage of the favorable combination of a high tide and calm seas to visit the fabled mangroves of Bahia Amortajada on Isla San Jose. Both kayaks and Zodiacs bore the explorers over the crystal clear water lined by red mangroves. Darting among the prop roots were swiftly swimming fish with deeply forked tails. These were identified as Pacific flagfin mojarras. Mojarras are noted for their pointed snouts and highly protrusible mouths which they use to snap up their bottom-dwelling prey with amazing speed and accuracy. The day concluded with an afternoon visit to Half Moon Bay on the neighboring island of San Francisco for snorkeling, hiking and tide pooling. We will all sleep well tonight.
