This morning we spent a few hours in the zodiacs at the mouth of the lagoon in search of gray whales. We were not disappointed. Every whale-watching trip produced excellent encounters with the whales. Many mothers with their newborn babies were swimming around in various areas of the bay. The babies, many of whom are very small, stay right on top of or in very close proximity to their mothers. The very young ones have deep depressions or dimples on their upper jaw where the hair follicles are found. One curious baby in particular seemed especially interested in the whale watchers and stuck its head and eye out of the water very close to the Zodiacs. Shortly afterwards the mother spyhopped. It was an exciting morning and a wonderful experience to be so near these large but very gentle animals. The many newborn whales we saw were a clear indication that this is a thriving and healthy population of whales
