We started our day with a nice hike through the sand dunes on Magdalena Island on the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula. On the way back to the Zodiacs I was wandering along the shore and found this baby Bullseye Stingray (Diplobatis ommata), one of the 23 species of skates and rays that can be found in this area.

It was only about 4-5 inches long and struggling on the sand to get back to the water since the tide was coming down. I was very pleased to see it, because it shows how bays and wetlands are such an important nursing ground for so many species of marine invertebrates, rays, sharks and other fishes.
