Bring out the horns…. This horn shark (Heterodontus francisi), a member of the bullhead shark family, was found lying on the sea floor in 65 feet of water at a pinnacle located off of the island of Isla Rasa. Scouring the reef at night for urchins, fishes, and crabs this nocturnal feeder is well equipped with both cutting and crushing teeth to devour its prey. To avoid predation itself it is endowed with two poisonous ridged spines located in front of the dorsal fins which prevent ingestion. Egg cases produced by females are coiled and are wedged into the reef for protection.
