McNary Wildlife Area, Oregon
The last Zodiac is headed back to the M/V Sea Bird after a fine nature walk in the McNary Wildlife Area. Dock??? We don't need a dock, when we have the Zodiacs to provide transportation to beach landings along the Columbia River or anyplace the Sea Bird goes in Alaska, Baja and the Pacific Northwest. Today our shore excursion turned up "tons" of wood ducks, a bunch of black-crowned night herons and a variety of other birds. The wildlife area that we visited was actually the gravel spit for the sand and gravel that went into the building of McNary Dam. It was then designed as a wildlife area and with great results. We also saw some of the native grasses that were here during the time of Lewis and Clark. The grasses had been grazed out, but are returning slowly to the Columbia-Snake region with proper grazing management. Quote of our first full day "I can't believe we have done so much in 26 hours".
