Cascade Creek and Petersburg
Wet and beautiful. Wet and wild. Wet and wet. Yes, this is the real Southeast Alaska where men are men, women are women and the wilds are wet. Remember the last time you were in the shower, well that’s how it was today on our morning hikes at Cascade Creek and our afternoon visit to Petersburg.
Beautiful waterfall swollen by the recent rain tumbles to the sea over huge granite boulders. A gigantic plume of mist envelops the hikers as they near the falls. The trail itself is a small stream washing down the steep hillside. We stop and breathe in the misty essence of Cascade Falls, exhilarated by this wild place of old growth forest and reverberating sounds of rushing water. Today we truly experienced the rain forest, witnessing every shade of green imaginable, glistening with moisture.
Autumn is in the air. Deciduous plants have begun their slow decline, returning their borrowed nutrients to the black forest soil as they drop their leaves in anticipation of winter. Mushrooms and lichens flourish in this damp, cool place.
