Our second afternoon on the west or pacific side of the Baja Peninsula was spent peacefully walking on the dunes of Isla Magdalena. The Sea Lion lay at anchor near La Florida at the north end of Hull Cannal. Zodiacs were lowered and a group of us made our way to shore, preparing to head west to the Pacific. We had walked approximately one mile when we began to hear the sound of a freight train; which was in reality, the pounding Pacific Ocean at the first low tide after the early full moon in February. Among the many beach-strewn treasures found was an exquisite logger head sea turtle skull. These turtles are found in temperate and subtropical waters throughout the oceans of the world. They nest on gently sloping beaches, and feed on crabs, clams, mussels, jellyfish and shrimp. This sea turtle, so common to Pacific waters, left only its skull; the spirit of the animal remaining in its long cast shadow.
