La Entrada, Magdalena Bay

There was excitement on the air as we boarded the pangas, or local fiberglass outboard motor boats, for a great day of whale watching. We headed south towards La Entrada, the gap between Magdalena and Santa Margarita Islands, and the main entrance to Magdalena Bay. Once there, we started searching for grey whales, as we knew that many of them favor its clear and deep waters; almost immediately many blows were detected all around us and an already great day turned into one of pure joy! Most of the whales congregated here were mature individuals, and they seemed very interested in members of their same species. We were able to watch them swimming in pairs or trios, at times simultaneously raising their majestic flukes out of the water before a deep dive. We all enjoyed their antics for a long time and had the chance to admire their marbled bodies up close.

After lunch we continued our whale watching at La Entrada; the whales seemed to wait for us to come back and greeted our presence with their flukes high in the air. It doesn’t really matter how many times you have seen whales before, the sense of awe that they produce always makes it feel like your first time! After many more tall blows, hitch-hiking barnacles and always-cheered flukes, I am sure that we all agree that today won’t be easily forgotten!
