Ensenada Grande

As the sun popped over the horizon, the Sea Lion made its way to Ensenada Grande. We anchored off the coast of two gorgeous beaches. Kayakers were eager to get off the ship as this was their first morning to experience the waters alone. We saw many fish, such as sergeant majors, swimming below us because the water was so transparent. As the air temperature rose, many of us were tempted to jump into the crystal clean sea. Hikers had an equally incredible time as the made their way to the top of the rocky cliffs, enjoying extraordinary views and catching quite satisfying glimpses of the endemic antelope ground squirrel along the way.

After lunch, the Sea Lion anchored off of Los Islotes where, on our Zodiac tours around the small rocky islet, we were able to see not only boobies and sea lions, but also a Peregrine falcon pair hunched over a fresh kill on the cliff. No doubt, given the time of year and the unusual sight of two falcons feasting together, this was a prelude to courtship. During our snorkel adventure, many vibrant and different colored fish finned beneath us! Towards the end of our time in the water, even the sea lions joined the fun, flying beneath us with all the grace of birds in air.

We ended our adventurous day back at Ensenada Grande with a barbeque on the beach. As the sun went down and the full moon rose up in the starry sky, we grouped around the fire. It’s days like these, with sunshine, activities, wildlife, and good food that make everyone want to experience what we have had today here in Baja.
