Sunshine, sunshine and more sunshine was the order of the day as we traveled into Hell's Canyon today. Although the temperature was just a little above freezing when we awoke this morning, the sun was out and the day warmed up spectacularly. We boarded jet boats in the town of Clarkston, Washington and sped over 50 miles up the Snake River to the famous Nez Perce Crossing at Dug Bar. Along the way we spotted several herds of Rocky Mountain Bighorns, mule deer, and numerous bird species -- including an incredibly close view of a Golden Eagle with prey in its talons. We stopped for coffee at a place known as Cache Creek, and were treated to this year's crop of walnuts off the immense English walnut tree growing in the caretaker's front yard. We returned to Cache Creek for a leisurely picnic lunch in the sun, and then made a late afternoon stop at Buffalo Eddy, for close looks at ancient Indian rock art etched into the boulders alongside the river. It seemed as though each bend in the river held another beautiful surprise -- like this sweet little waterfall at Cherry Creek.
