Columbia River Gorge
Today was a day of exploration of one of the most fascinating sections of the Columbia River, the 75 mile long gorge. We started at first light with a great view, from the bow of the Sea Lion, of an elk pictograph. Following breakfast it was a windy dockage at the Dalles and then a short bus ride to Rock Fort, which is one of the very few places on the river where you can say that the Corp of Discovery was here. The expedition spent three days here in late October, drying out from the rapids of the previous days. From here it was on to the Discovery Center and then a cruise of the center part of the Columbia River Gorge.
The afternoon found us doing an intimate exploration of the final section of the gorge with stops at a couple of waterfalls and a stunning view from Crown Point down into the Gorge. By far, the most spectacular waterfall was Multnomah, plunging over 600 feet. It was a fantastic exploration of the Columbia River Gorge.
