Los Islotes and Bahia Bonanza, Espiritu Santo
Shortly after breakfast while en route to Los Islotes, a feeding frenzy of common dolphin suddenly appeared out of nowhere. The water frothed with whitecaps as they flew from the water pursuing their prey. We were amazed at the way they could quickly change their course and the endless energy that they seemed to have. We had just recently rolled out of bed and had satisfied our hunger on a fabulous breakfast buffet and didn’t feel all that energetic. We were, however, eagerly anticipating an encounter with the California sea lion.
Soon, we had circled the island and got some close views of adorable sea lion pups in all stages of activity. Some were sleeping but the majority seemed to be delighted in discovering the water, and we saw one leap in from a high perch for such a little fellow, to join its mother for a swim. After returning to the ship for our snorkeling attire, we joined these curious mammals for a little romp. The water was warm and clear and as the morning wore on, some of the yearlings became quite active and raced straight at us only to turn away at the last second!
We planned to explore Bahia Bonanza located on the southeast side of the breathtaking Isla Espiritu Santo for the afternoon. Kayaks were sent ashore, snorkelers set off from the beach, and scuba divers performed a giant stride from the Sea Voyager stern. We reluctantly departed from the white sandy shores of this protected bay and returned to our ship. Tomorrow we would say goodbye to this magical place and take a little bit of Baja with us.
