Barro Colorado Island, Panama
The first day of this magnificent journey began with a fresh cloudiness that brought early showers. The lushness of the tropical forest seemed to shine as the first rays broke through the clouds. The sounds of the early rising monkeys and birds filled the air with a mystical symphony.
We waited for the excellent guides from the Smithsonian to board the vessel. As soon as the proper introductions took place, we headed to the marvelous island of Barro Colorado to begin exploring the wonder that lay hidden in the evergreen vegetation. There is a feeling that has no comparison, which is the excitement felt when walking through a rainforest. The red clayish mud on the hiking boots, sweat rolling down foreheads, and the buzzing of different types of insects… all come together to remind you that you are alive. Strong hearts, and willing spirits, made our expeditioners take courage to experience the uniqueness of the island.
Agoutis, toucans, guans, monkeys, sloths and crocodiles surrounded us. The expectations were filled. We were in the bush, the real bush! In the distance, portions of the Gatun Lake were visible through the gaps in the vegetation. The green water seemed serene as beneath the endless fight for survival continued. Small fish jumped out trying to escape from the bigger ones. The chain of life developed.
Through crystal clear rivers and mountainous undulating terrains, the strong of heart made their way to discover the beauty and greatness that life has to offer. As the day advanced, light showers fell bringing life to the forest and its inhabitants. The mystic experience of discovering new environments became an integral part of all the members as an excellent experience was obtained. Life was incredibly good to all on board this day!
