National Geographic Quest entered into the waters of Glacier Bay National Park around five A.M and shortly thereafter we picked up a park ranger and a Tlingit cultural interpreter from Bartlett Cove. We sailed the entire length of the western arm of Glacier Bay (nearly 60 miles).

Throughout the day enormous mountain peaks towered above us making for stunning views. Our first visit brought us to the west side of the tiny South Marble Island which is home to hundreds of Steller sea lions, puffins, and numerous other bird species. As we continued north we spotted a couple brown bears up on nearby ridges as well as over ten mountain goats precariously hiking on Gloomy Knob. Just after lunch we approached the massive Margerie Glacier which is nearly 21 miles long and stands over 250 tall at the water’s edge. We were fortunate enough to witness a couple of small calving events and had very cooperative weather making a full day on the deck quite pleasant.
