Today we woke to low clouds and glassy seas. The horizon blended between sky and ocean as hundreds of seabirds flew at a distance. Our morning destination was LeConte Bay. We came here to tour the ice that has made its way down from LeConte Glacier and grounded on its moraine. As they melt, twist, turn, and crack we get to see their deep shades of blue, their amazing shapes, and dynamic surfaces in the morning light. As we slowly cruised by, harbor seals curiously peeked at our strange boats, some of the seals were only a few weeks old. After a great morning, we made our way to Petersburg.
Though small, the town of Petersburg is bursting with character. Its Norwegian and fishing heritage are well on display throughout this charming town. Our visit here was full of activities: biking, hiking, dock tours, flightseeing, and walks about town were just some of the things we got into. On Kupreanof Island we took walks through the muskeg, a bog habitat with unique plant communities. Of particular interest were the carnivorous plants we found, such as round-leaved sundew. We saw lots of evidence of wildlife including moose tracks, bear scat, and quite a few grouse feathers.
After our usual cocktail hour and nightly recaps, we had a crab feast for dinner! Through the dining room windows we overlooked the harbor in Petersburg which was full of fishing vessels either getting ready for their seasons, or in-between fishing trips. This place is always a delightful stop on our voyages; we’re thankful for another great day in this wonderful place.
