We started our day with a pre-breakfast walk to a beautiful green sand beach, important for turtle nesting. The early risers spent the first hours of light on this long beach full of ghost crabs, turtles, and marine and land birds.
After breakfast, the first activity was a Zodiac ride that took us along the rocky coast of this middle aged island, where lava flows and erosion create interesting cliffs and rocky shores. Petrels, phalaropes and other marine birds were displaying in front of our cameras all morning. At the same time, our team of young global explorers went out in one of the Zodiacs to learn to ride it in the calm but windy waters of this beautiful cove.
Before moving to the next destination of the day, we ended the morning with a refreshing and relaxing snorkel in a sheltered bay. Sharks, moray eels and big groups of fish were an important part of the last deep water snorkel of the week.
In the afternoon we moved our vessel to Egas Port to enjoy a black sand beach landing followed by a hike on the shoreline at low tide. The walk through the inland part of the trail allowed us to find land birds and even snakes! By the time we got to the shore, the light was perfect for photography. We found many marine birds, and one of the highlights was a baby American oyster catcher being fed by its parents.
