During the 30-year reign of Shah Jahan, India’s Mughal Empire was a celebrated center of the arts. The exceptional quality of Mughal painting, handspun silks, and spectacular jewels are well known, but the period is best represented today by iconic architecture—most famously, the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan’s stunning tomb for his adored wife Mumtaz is the culmination of the era’s extraordinary craftsmanship, a heavenly dream of gleaming marble adorned with mosaics and encrusted with gems.

It is for this Mughal Emperor that The Jahan is named. Inspired by the romance and glamour of the age and exhibiting the same outstanding artisanry and attention to detail, The Jahan sails the Mekong with regal aplomb.

The Influence of the British Raj

Jahan Lounge Bar.jpg

The intricate wooden bar in the East India Club & Lounge.

Two hundred years after the reign of Shah Jahan, aristocratic life under the British Raj took hold. That influence of British culture is evident aboard
The Jahan, most noticeably in the East India Club & Lounge. Reminiscent of a British Colonial gentlemen’s club, the Lounge is a welcoming spot to unwind after an inspiring day on the river, share a cocktail with fellow guests, and listen to the evening’s Recap. The sophisticated gathering place features lattice chairs, crystal lighting fixtures, and a spectacular curved wooden bar inlaid with decorative Indian designs and floral motifs.

A lovely spot to rest, read, or just watch the river go by.

Eastern and Western designs blend seamlessly throughout the ship. Carved doorways and wainscoting, elegant wall stencils, and circa-1900-style telephones are some notable elements. Other special touches include handsome wooden furniture inset with mother of pearl, and Indian art and artefacts adorning the walls in both public spaces and staterooms. Comforts like spacious walk-in showers, Jacuzzi, and fine bedding are also not to be overlooked.

A Suite Inspired by Poetry

Jahan Lord Byron Suite.png
The spacious Lord Byron suite is the height of luxury and style.

One of the ship’s most spectacular suites is named for the British Romantic  poet Lord Byron. A man of many adventures, Byron had the sea in his blood. His father was a sea captain and his grandfather set a record for circumnavigating the world.

The poet could only have dreamed of The Jahan’s Lord Byron Suite. Its 549- square feet include a king-size wooden four poster bed flanked by peacock-accented lamps, walls adorned with murals of bucolic life in Mughal India, multiple sitting areas, and a private deck from where guests can view the passing scenery from their own private Jacuzzi.
