Fogo Island Inn Post-Voyage Extension

Cap off your coastal exploration of Canada on this island at the ends of the earth

Fogo Island Inn is located off the coast of Newfoundland at the furthest eastern reach of Canada. Experience the inn and its soulful surroundings over the course of several days—savor superb meals featuring local ingredients, call in on the island’s artist-in-residence program, take in the untamed wilderness on a berry-picking excursion, and get acquainted with the infectious hospitality of this remote outport community.

Day 1 - Disembark the ship/Charter flight to Fogo Island

Disembark National Geographic Explorer in the morning and take a short, scenic drive through St. John’s, en route to the airport where you will meet our privately chartered aircraft which will whisk you directly to the Fogo Island airstrip. Check in to the Fogo Island Inn and enjoy the view from your suite's floor-to-ceiling windows. After a delicious lunch and an orientation, head out with a culinary guide on a berry-picking excursion to discover the 20 types of edible berries flourishing on the island. Then return to the inn with your bounty and participate in a pie/jam-making class. During cocktail hour learn how to make infusions with the bartender and end the day with an outdoor Newfoundland 'boil-up'—local cuisine cooked over an open flame. (L,D)

Day 2 - Fogo Island

Wake up to a special little surprise just outside your door: an early morning "Tackle Box" with fresh juice, tea/coffee and pastries. After a more leisurely breakfast in the main dining room, board the M/V Ketanja* for a half-day tour of some of the outlying islands and abandoned settlements around Fogo. Enjoy a picnic lunch on Little Fogo Island and take a short walk up to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, a beautifully restored heritage site. After the boat tour, meet up with a local artist guide to see the sculpture of the extinct Great Auk and to tour the Long Studio, a solitary off-the-grid studio, designed by architect Todd Saunders, which hovers on a series of stilts that lifts the structure above the ground to frame a spectacular view of the North Atlantic Ocean. This evening’s dinner will be a three-course meal followed by time to unwind in the wood-fired sauna or in the rooftop hot tubs, enjoying the dazzling night sky. (B,L,D)

*All outdoor activities are subject to weather conditions and will be adjusted as such.

Day 3 - Fogo Island

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then choose from two different length hikes with local geologists. Both will explore the subarctic type of ecosystem and view the 420 million year old rocks on Fogo Island. After a picnic lunch there are two planned activities: a visit to a boat-building shop followed by a tour of the Fogo Island Furniture Shop and workshop where you will meet the talented carpenters behind these distinctive pieces of furniture. Dinner will be served family-style for a relaxing and open evening. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Fogo Island/St. Johns

After breakfast, transfer via ferry to Gander Airport. A packed lunch from Fogo Island will be provided. Arrive in St. Johns and transfer to the Sheraton Hotel for an overnight. The late afternoon is at leisure and dinner is served in the hotel. (B,D)

Day 5 - Depart for home

After a leisurely breakfast in the hotel, transfer to the airport for flights home. (B)
