Estancia La Rabida, Montevideo, Uruguay

Our stop in Uruguay was the Port of Montevideo. After an interesting visit to the Old Town, we went 25 miles east to visit an “Estancia”, or cattle ranch. Here we were accompanied by the owners and “gauchos” (cowboys), as we went down to the shores of the “Rio de la Plata”, or River Plate, where these men on Arab horses showed us their riding technique.

Back at the ranch, we had a typical Uruguayan sumptuous lunch, consisting of different types of meat all free of hormones and fat! These are range animals. A lovely looking and tasty buffet was available, and at the end, a delicious dessert of strawberries and cream. For other diversions and fun, some of us sat on a cow skin, and were pulled at a good pace around a grassy field while others had the opportunity to go horseback riding. Later we visited the dairy barn and the milking machine.

On the buses once again, we headed back to Montevideo, and south, to new adventures.
