Santa Cruz Island
Coming back to civilization can be rewarding after all. Puerto Ayora, the largest town in Galapagos, is populated by people who love the islands and work for their conservation, and that is very gratifying. There are many teachers, parents and guides who educate the new generation about the wonders of this archipelago and the need for its protection. Those who have grown up here are pretty aware of their environment; they know that some species are unique to this place, found no where else in the world. Children play around marine iguanas that walk indifferently through town and often swim with adventurous sea lions found exploring the crowded bay of Puerto Ayora. And this is the way it should be everywhere. Kids should grow up conscious of their own habitat, learning to love it and protect it.
However, today was not only a day for conservation. It was a celebration of life and a celebration of victory. The whole town went out to the streets to show the greatest joy because our country, Ecuador, classified for the first time ever in the World Champion Cup. This was a country festivity, and Puerto Ayora, made of proud Ecuadorians, took to the streets to share with each other and share with nature the happiness of being a united and champion nation.
