Hood or Espanola Island
We have reached the southern most corner of the enchanted islands and we had spent the whole day exploring two different locations in the same island, Española. Gardner bay was the first one and it was such a great place for water activities. The turquoise waters indeed invited you to jump in, but kayaking was also another option to enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding colorful cliffs. This morning I had the chance to join our guests and we had a great time paddling, especially when a few curious juvenile sea lions decided to follow us for a while.
The afternoon caught us at Pta. Suarez, a rich wildlife location full of reddish-colored marine iguanas sunbathing, curious mocking birds hopping around, and sea lions of course! Sea birds play such an important role into the Galápagos fauna and it seems that Española is the right place for them. Nazca boobies and swallow-tailed gull can be seen along the cliffs, but the highlight for many of us was to see the magnificent waved albatross. This giant sea bird breeds from April to December and we all had a great look at these ocean travelers. I had always liked to see them while on land, because of the funny clumsiness as they make their way to the high cliffs to jump off and fly. As we got to see our big highlight of the day, it was time to say good bye, but not before we get one last glimpse to our eternal friends, the sea lions, which were waiting eagerly at the dock as we returned from our walk. Later in the evening the Captain's farewell cocktail time was a great chance for friends to show pictures and share the wonderful memories that we just had in this magical place.
