Floreana Island
We started the day with a visit that took us back in time to the seventeen hundreds, when a whaler by the name of Captain James Colnett had the idea of setting a swap mailing system in the Galápagos. We did not see the original barrel, but we went to the same place, a hidden beach on the northern side of Floreana where people have left their letters for more than two hundred years. And of course, we participated in this old tradition as well!
After breakfast we submerged in clear water where sea lions joined us in the fun. There was a baby who decided to play in front of us with a sea star, and it was fascinating to observe its underwater talent. There were many takers for the glass bottom boat and for a Zodiac ride around Champion islet in search of one of the rarest birds in the Galápagos: the Floreana mockingbird.
In the afternoon we snorkeled around Devil’s Crown, with sharks and huge schools of fish. There was the option of swimming from the green beach of Punta Cormorant where a few more sea lions joined our adventurous group in play. The walk took us close to flamingos and a nesting beach of green sea turtles. Floreana had it all for us today!
