This afternoon as we cruised in Wrangell Narrows near Petersburg in Southeast Alaska, everyone was really excited to see a pod of five transient killer whales including two calves! Everyone enjoyed seeing the young calf who had a playful way of coming to the surface to breathe. The calf did not stray far from the mother, and as this attentiveness was becoming more evident, one of the mothers on board looked at her son and asked him to take note of the calf's behavior!
This morning everyone had the choice to go flightseeing in a helicopter or float plane or go for a walk in the muskeg. Group members came back with stories of seeing mountain goats, glaciers, and harbor seals from the plane. I went for the walk in the muskeg, my favorite habitat in Alaska. I loved looking through a hand lens at the sundew, a beautiful pink insectivorous plant. I can't wait until tomorrow!
