Our second day of the "Voyage of Voyages" on the Sea Bird began with a glorious sunrise and calm seas. The vessel left her anchorage at approximately 7:00 AM and began a short passage back to the entrance of San Ignacio Lagoon. Zodiacs were lowered and soon we were on our way for our second day of whale watching.
As we made our way into the entrance of the lagoon, the wind began to pick up, with small waves and whitecaps all around the Zodiacs. The boat drivers explained we were experiencing offshore winds because of a fog bank and cool air mixing with the air of the Pacific Ocean and the early sunshine. Because of the wind it was hard at first to spot whales. But soon, cow-calf pairs became visible as we adjusted to the new weather conditions. Slowly, the panga drivers brought our boats through the waves for closer and closer views of California gray whales. As the whales surfaced to breathe there were rainbows reflected in their breath as it blew across our Zodiacs.
