Bahia Magdalena
Our final morning aboard the Sea Lion began early, as we were once again in the midst of the gray whales that spend their winter months in the lagoons of Magdalena Bay. Two rounds of Zodiac trips were offered to search for the ever increasing numbers of mothers and calves that spend time swimming back and forth against the strong tidal currents in the narrow Boca de Soledad. The conditions were perfect as we made our way from the ship towards the Boca. Along with the grey whales a large group of bottlenose dolphins approached a few of the boats to bow and wake ride. It was a thrilling sight.
Mid morning the ship lifted anchor and headed south. After a deck lunch enjoyed during wonderfully warm weather as the ship retransited the Hull Canal, the kayaks and Zodiacs were put down and an exploration was done of the mangrove forests that line the winding waterway. Whether in the kayaks or the Zodiacs the mangroves offered up a host of birds including a heron and the rare mangrove warbler. It was a nice last outing of our expedition.
